Seated Avalokiteshvara
(Guanyin)
China, Shanxi Province, 1050-1150
H. 175 cm, carved wood, painted and gilded
This masterpiece of Buddhist sculpture represents
Guanyin, the god of compassion. In the Song
Dynasty (960-1279), the representation of Guanyin
in this pose became the most popular subject of
Buddhist art. Wooden figures from this period are
fairly common, though few examples of this size and
quality have survived.
