Seated Avalokiteshvara

                                                                      H. 175 cm, carved wood, painted and gilded







                                                                      This masterpiece of Buddhist sculpture represents
                                                                      Guanyin, the god of compassion. In the Song
                                                                      Dynasty (960-1279), the representation of Guanyin
                                                                      in this pose became the most popular subject of
                                                                      Buddhist art. Wooden figures from this period are
                                                                      fairly common, though few examples of this size and
                                                                      quality have survived.
