Buddha head
Northern China, 530-80
H. 51 cm, white marble
This outstandingly carved head comes from a temple
or chapel in a Buddhist monastery in northern China,
one of the first in a series of large monasteries
founded in that region in the 5th and 6th centuries.
The creation of these enormous monastic complexes
ensued from the introduction of Buddhism from India
by pilgrims and merchants.
