Lion bracelet
Iran, Ziwiye, 800-600 BCE
Diam. 9.5 cm, gold
The monumentality, iconography and style of this
goldsmith masterpiece embody the artistic synthesis
that emerged in what is now North-East Iran as of the
8th century BCE. The complexity of its decoration and
its imposing size give this bracelet an almost sculptural
dimension, suggesting that its primary function was
for formal or ceremonial occasions and that it was
probably rarely worn. Lions played a special role in
the imagery of the ancient Near East. Formidable
and majestic, they were thought to enhance the
power of those wearing them. Sometimes associated
with certain gods, lions were also an expression of
royal power.
