Lion bracelet

                                                                                                                                             The monumentality, iconography and style of this
                                                                                                                                             goldsmith masterpiece embody the artistic synthesis
                                                                                                                                             that emerged in what is now North-East Iran as of the
                                                                                                                                             8th century BCE. The complexity of its decoration and
                                                                                                                                             its imposing size give this bracelet an almost sculptural
                                                                                                                                             dimension, suggesting that its primary function was
                                                                                                                                             for formal or ceremonial occasions and that it was
                                                                                                                                             probably rarely worn. Lions played a special role in
                                                                                                                                             the imagery of the ancient Near East. Formidable
                                                                                                                                             and majestic, they were thought to enhance the
                                                                                                                                             power of those wearing them. Sometimes associated
                                                                                                                                             with certain gods, lions were also an expression of
                                                                                                                                             royal power.
