Sarcophagus of Princess
Henuttawy: coffins and
mummy wrappings

The vivacity of the colours adorning the sarcophagus
that protects the body of the Pharaoh’s daughter
Princess Henuttawy (“Mistress of the Two Lands”)
is remarkable, as is the finesse of the painted
ornamentation. Inserted inside two other sarcophagi,
one of wood and the other of cartonnage, the
ensemble was intended to ensure the protection of Highlights of the Collection
the princess and her survival in the afterlife. The gilded
wood of the funeral mask, with delicate features and
elegantly underlined eyes, was intended to reproduce
Louvre Abu Dhabi
the imperishable flesh of the gods.
