Funeral portrait
of a man with a cup
Egypt, Antinopolis (?), 225-50
23 × 12.7 cm, wax paint on wood
This man with a cup is likely one of the most
accomplished works resulting from the intermixing
of Egyptian and Roman artistic traditions. The Highlights of the Collection
interplay of materials and the vigorous brushwork
testify to an artist who had broken with the Roman
pictorial techniques, whereas the large striking eyes
are synonymous with Egyptian representations. The
cup and tunic indicate the high social rank of this Louvre Abu Dhabi
anonymous man.
