This malangan object from north-western
New Ireland is one of a series of artefacts presented
in a cage during large funeral ceremonies, and
usually hung from branches. Their exhibition is at the
core of major ritual ceremonies sometimes bringing
together several hundred participants, during which
the responsibilities and rights of the dead are passed
on to the next generation.
