Piet Mondrian [1872-1944]
Composition with Blue,
Red, Yellow and Black
France, Paris, 1922
79.8 × 50 cm, oil on canvas
This painting previously owned by fashion designer
Yves Saint Laurent, one of whose fashion collections
was inspired by Mondrian, was the first acquisition
of Louvre Abu Dhabi. Extending off at the edges, Highlights of the Collection
the planes of colour seem to guide our gaze to a
space exceeding the composition. A great fan of
neoplasticism, in this period Piet Mondrian worked
solely with black, white and pure colours: red, yellow
and blue. He relied on right angles, the principle of Louvre Abu Dhabi
“constant relationships” of his compositions, to build
asymmetrical grids of vertical and horizontal lines.
