Édouard Manet [1832-83]
The Bohemian
France, Paris, 1861-62 (cut out in 1867)
90.5 × 55.3 cm, oil on canvas
Initially surrounded by other figures, this Bohemian
was separated by the artist himself, cutting him out
of the composition to make him the sole subject of
the painting. Dressed in brightly-coloured rags and
with a fearless look, he is no less proud. Dignified
and majestic, he symbolises those poor but free
Montmartre artists who were just starting to be
referred to as members of “La Bohème”.
